Urethral dilatation (bougienage)
Urethral dilation a medical procedure that is performed to treat the stricture of the urethra or after the previous procedures of urethral dilation (optical urethrotomy or urethroplasty).
How Is the Surgery Performed?
Children are operated on under general anesthesia. In adults, it is done under local, spinal, or general anesthesia.
The urethra is dilated by bougienage. After inserting a local anesthetic lubricant to numb and lubricate, the urethra is gradually stretched (dilated) by the plastic or metal dilators of progressively increasing diameter.
What Should Be Known After Surgery?
The patient should contact an urologist immediately if urinary retention occurs or fever develops.
