Cutaneous and subcutaneous tumor removal

Surgical removal of a cutaneous or subcutaneous tumor is recommended if a tumor:

  • Undergoes a change in size, shape, or color;
  • Is painful;
  • Causes discomfort when wearing clothing;
  • Has an unsatisfactory esthetic appearance.

How Is the Surgery Performed?

The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia. If a tumor is large or there are multiple tumors, general anesthesia can be administered.
An incision is placed around the tumor, within the margins of healthy tissues. The tumor is removed, and the incisions are closed.
If necessary, the excised tumor is subjected to histological examination.

What Should Be Known After Surgery?

Depending on the site treated, the stitches are removed after 7-14 days following the surgery.
The postoperative scar should be protected from direct sunlight not shorter than 6 months to make it less visible.
The size of the scar not always depends on postoperative wound and scar care. It is known that some areas of the body are more prone to scarring, and as consequence, abnormal scarring may occur, resulting in thick, discolored, painful, or itchy scars (hypertrophic scars and keloids). It is very important to pay attention to this, as timely treatment (as soon as changes in scars are seen) makes it possible to prevent corrective surgeries.
